Note from
the President
Society
of Governor William Bradford Descendents
Good Morrow,
My name is Carol Scarborough and I was elected on September 11, 2005 to the positions of President and Historian of the Society of Governor Bradford Descendants' Inc. I joined the Society in July of 2005 but I do have a few things to recommend me for the positions besides the fact that I wanted them, felt I would do a good job and had a lot of enthusiasm.
I joined the Society of Mayflower Descendants in July of 2001 and I'm the Founding and present Governor of the Waco Colony, Texas Society of Mayflower Descendants, Chartered in April 2002 with 22 adult members of my family. Every November, the Treasurer, Jerrie Geisler & I, go into the schools and present programs about the Pilgrims "Coming to America". I'm also Chaplain of my DAR Chapter (my 3 daughters & 10 other members of my family are also members...I typed all of our papers plus others I've brought into the Chapter), I'm in 7 Lineal Societies, on the Board of Directors of The Central Texas Genealogical Society and Queen Mother of the Red Hat Chapter, "The Mad Hatters of Central Texas", I founded in Waco. I've been married for 43 years to a wonderful understanding man, have 3 daughters & 2 granddaughters, I love Genealogy and researching, I'm extremely proud of my Bradford Heritage (aren't we all?), I love to ride & I have 6 horses on 18 acres in a little community called China Spring, about 25 minutes from Waco and 15 minutes from Crawford, Texas.
This Chapter has the potential to be huge considering the number of Bradford descendants there are. Our goal is to let everyone know that we are ready, willing and able to be recognized as one of the premier Societies in America. It will take work and effort but we can do it. Look who we are descended from!
We are already looking at several projects that we will tell you about as soon as we find out more information. If you have questions, my e-mail address is Shewulf82@aol.com , please put "Bradford Society" in the Subject line so it doesn't go to the Spam folder.
Thank you for your interest in the Society,
Carol

The Society of

We extend a warm welcome to
all our cousins!!
So who was William
Bradford?
William Bradford was one of the pilgrims who established Plymouth Colony and
was its governor for more than 30 years.
Bradford was born in March 1590 in Austerfield,
Yorkshire, the son of a yeoman farmer.
As a young man, he joined Puritan groups that met illegally in nearby Scrooby
and was a member of that congregation when it separated from the Church of
England in 1606.
Bradford was among the 125 Scrooby separatists who sought religious
sanctuary in
Holland. When the congregation decided to seek refuge in
America,
Bradford took major responsibility for arranging the details of the
emigration. The term Pilgrim is derived from his description of himself and his
coreligionists as they left
Holland
July 22, 1620 for
Southampton, where they joined another group of English separatists on
the Mayflower. When John Carver, Plymouth Colony's first governor, died suddenly
in April 1621,
Bradford was unanimously elected to replace him. He was reelected 30
times. In 1640, Bradford and the group of original settlers known as the "old
comers" turned over to the colony the proprietary rights to its lands, which had
been granted to him by the Warwick Patent and then shared by him with the old
comers. During the period of his governorship, and especially during the first
few years,
Bradford provided the strong, steady leadership that kept the tiny
community alive. He strove to sustain the religious ideals of the founders and
to keep the colony's settlements compact and separate from the larger
neighboring colonies.
Bradford died on May 9 or 19, 1657.
